For students in grades 3 and above, parents, and teachers of any grade level or subject: This is the 17th annual celebration and special day honoring the life and legacy of Charles Lacy Veach, who grew up in Honolulu with an interest in science, had a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, and went on to fly two NASA Space Shuttle missions.
Astronaut Lacy Veach serves to remind us all that the dreams of today can be forged into exploration and discoveries of tomorrow. While in Hawai‘i, a child once asked Astronaut Veach: "What does it take to become an astronaut?" Veach responded, "You've got to believe in your dreams and you've got to be hard-headed enough to never let them go." Cooperative game-Roadway: children practice giving and receiving trust. One child is the car has his/her eyes closed while the other is the driver. Children enjoyed driving each other around without crashing!
More cooperative games-Strattleball: children try to score a goal by hitting the ball between another child’s legs. Children build strength and focus protecting their goals! In Kindergarten we are beginning our science learning and discovery with the topic of forces and interaction! In our first science lesson we began exploring forces or "work words" and how machines can make our work easier. We talked about digging with our hands, a shovel, and an excavator. In our exploration students acted out all three situations and quickly began to realize that machines have greater force and can get work done faster!
Take a look to see our kindergarteners actively engaged in learning about forces by digging like excavators! We loved acting like excavators! We even drew pictures of excavators :) For this quarter in reader's workshop, kindergarteners are exploring their reading super powers! Just the other day we received a note from Reader Man and learned all about our pointer power! Did you know that pointing to each word one time makes your reading even stronger? Not only did Reader Man teach us about this reading super power. He also left us power pointers! Take a look at some of our kindergarten friends using their power pointer in their reading!

Keolu Students, Staff & Parents:
Please wear ORANGE on Wednesday 10/24/18 in support of Unity Day, an opportunity for us to stand firmly together to STOP BULLYING! Our campers are doing great!!! We have our own FIRST Lego League Jr. team! FIRST Lego League Jr. is a program designed to introduce a group of six students ages 6-10 to STEM concepts through the use of legos! Because our team can only have six students, our students were each selected for special qualities that were identified by families and teachers! Our specially hand selected team at Keolu is guided by two adult coaches, Mrs. West and Mrs. Hardesty. This program focuses on building interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through a real-world challenge – to be solved by research, critical thinking, and imagination. Under the guidance of their two coaches and our core values, students will participate in a yearly challenge! They will cooperate in questioning, thinking, and research around the challenge in order to problem solve. After they solve the problems or challenge the students will build a lego model of their solution and create a show me poster that displays all of their thinking, learning, and collaboration. Our team meets after school to discuss our challenge, research, problem solve, and build. Every year there is a new challenge and an expo to celebrate it! At our expo we will present our model, our show me poster, and all of our learning to the other FIRST Lego League Jr. teams across the state! FIRST Core ValuesWe express the FIRST philosophies of Gracious Professionalism and Cooperation through our Core Values:

Keolu celebrated the International Day of Peace by bringing our families together for food, fun, and culture! Thank you to those who celebrated with us and created some amazing food dishes to share! Link to slideshow from this 'ohana night Link to student video Keolu values health and wellness. Our whole school comes together quarterly for our Wellness Days! We have multiple stations with activities like obstacle courses, healthy snacks, relaxing art, team building games, and yoga. We are supported by community partners AINA in Schools and Blue Zones Project. On Oct. 12th, 2018 some of Keolu's Student Council members attended the Hawaii Children and Youth Summit at our State Capitol. The Hawaii Children and Youth Summit brings our islands' children and young adults to the State Capitol for a day to share their ideas about what the Hawaii Legislature should do to make Hawaii a better place to live, learn and grow. By the end of the day, the young participants identified 5 top priority issues/solutions that will be included in the Keiki Caucus package of bills and resolutions. Participants are primarily children and youth up to age 21. |
